According to the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), myofascial release helps relieve joint stress, reduce muscle soreness, correct musculoskeletal imbalances, and improve neuromuscular efficiency. IASTM, or Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, is the use of plastic or metal tools to help restore range of motion and function to muscles.
This form of myofascial release has been around for some time in physical therapy, chiropractic and sports performance settings. The curve-shaped tools are used in a “scraping” motion with pressure to create a circulatory response in the adhered tissue.
