Muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility/agility, and body composition… These are the building blocks to total fitness.  Most people spend their time at the gym focusing on only one or two types of training, which will lead to one or two outcomes; overuse injuries and over training.  Often time’s people have the simple goal of losing a few pounds and toning up.  In the training world this means having a program that promotes loss of body fat, and increases in muscular density.  Many others have very specific performance goals, while others may be dealing with a previous injury and looking to get active again.  The fact is all of these different goals will need special care taken in achieving them.  How well you design your program and how consistent you stick to it will greatly determine your success.

Youth Fitness: Developing Skills for Life

What happened to “go outside and play”?  What happened to coming home when the street lights came on?  For better or worse over the last 20 years we have experienced a drastic change in the way our kids spend their free time.  From the invention of modern video games to the smartphone and wifi, there is no shortage of docile ways to spend our time.  I don’t want to sound naive, I love my smartphone and my video games and I know its not going anywhere.  Unfortunately, I am not the topic of discussion here.  I was raised in a very small town in Massachusetts where I played in the woods, built forts and more or less took advantage of physical activities everywhere I went.  Unbeknownst to me and the majority of my peers, we were developing our motor skills, musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems necessary to provide us with the base of what it takes to be an athlete or a physically active individual.
